Progress

Progress is watching a black woman stand tall and give a tender, unapologetic glimpse into the life of a mainstream, caring African-American family that would be our First Family.

I just watched Juan Williams on Fox, choked up in emotion, explain why this event matters so much. It's a moment of catharsis for the black community. I haven't found video for it yet. But Andrew Sullivan concurs: to understand that "black Americans - proud, unapologetic, culturally mainstream African-Americans - are now running this show... is striking." It was inevitable of course, especially considering how much more cosmopolitan my generation is, but it is such a remarkable moment for a community that has been so completely downtrodden and a progressive movement that has seen its three shining hopes dashed in the figures of JFK, RFK, and MLK.

I couldn't be more proud to see these serpents of our history fade into the foggy past, and allow for newer images, newer archetypes, newer narratives to gain sway in public consciousness. It is surely a signbearer of fuller human development across the boundaries of race. A good night indeed.
